Dordogne - 8 Day Self Guided Walk
8 days Gramat to St. Cere
Walk from the market town of Gramat to the riverside town of St Cere, Take in spectacular views of ravines and gorges in the Dordogne Valley, Visit ancient fortresses and honey-coloured villages, Explore prehistoric caves, Savour some of the most delectable cuisine and wines in France

The appeal of the Dordogne region is astonishingly wide-ranging. The fertility of the land and the plenitude of the rivers have made the Dordogne valley a favoured habitat for mankind for thousands of years. A history of struggle and conflict has left its mark on the architecture of the region. Rather than luxuriant chateaux, fortified castles are the more characteristic landmarks. The height of the rocky crags is matched by the depth of the gorges and our route through this beautiful region takes us past some of the most spectacular scenery in France.

Days 1-3Gramat to RocamadourStroll around the market town of Gramat to prepare for the coming adventure. Enjoy a day of grassy paths and intriguing ruins on the way to Rocamadour. The terraces that hold up the stone buildings here are shrouded in shadow at night, making it seem as if the houses are suspended in air.
Day 4Rocamadour to MeyronneWalk across the rolling hills of the Causse de Gramat, through woods and past farmland to the tiny riverside village of Meyronne. Take to the streets to see beautiful old houses that are typical of the region.
Day 5Meyronne to CarennacGaze down at the Dordogne River on the way to the tranquil village of Carennac, with a medieval priory at its heart. The priory dates from the 10th century and is famed for once being home to the writer Fenelon.
Day 6Carennac to LoubressacTake an optional longer route via Gouffre de Padirac, a town stunningly located on a rocky spur, or simply head up river to Loubressac. Overhanging the Cere and Bave rivers, this brown-roofed medieval town is awash with beautiful buildings and magical outlooks of the St Cere Valley.
Days 7-8Loubressac to St CereThe views over the Gorge d?Autoire are magnificent on the way to the final stop on this walking tour. The bustling market town of St Cere on the banks of the River Bave is a delightful place with a unique character. With two medieval towers dominating the skyline and wooden houses dating back from the 15th century, it is truly one of France's true hidden gems.
